* DDOT and MPD will monitor congestion using CCTV cameras and will make additional adjustments if necessary.

Phase V of AHOD
MPD Kicks Off All Hands on Deck Phase V
Mayor Adrian M. Fenty and Metropolitan Police Chief Cathy L. Lanier announced today the start of All Hands on Deck (AHOD) Phase V. AHOD began at 6 am today and concludes at 6 am on Sunday, July 26, 2009.
During the first six hours of Phase V of AHOD, officers arrested a homicide suspect in connection with the July 4th shooting of 23-year-old Malik Logan. Arrested was 22-year-old Dominic Robinson; Third District Vice detectives made six narcotics related arrests and recovered two guns; and Sixth District officers and detectives apprehended an armed robbery suspect.
“During the last AHOD, we made an arrest in a recent homicide, and we are continuing to close cases during Phase Five. The public is giving us a lot of helpful tips that are leading to arrests.” said Chief Lanier. “We are maintaining an active role of information sharing between the residents and officers, and it’s working.”
“All Hands on Deck is a great opportunity for District residents to partner with MPD officers in their neighborhoods as they work to ensure safe communities,” Mayor Fenty said. “I commend Chief Lanier and her team at MPD for their hard work to bring criminals to justice and make the District’s neighborhoods safer for all of us.”
All available officers will be on duty and on patrol throughout the city. The presence of the officers is to promote effective community relations with the use of information sharing. Officers will be walking on foot beats and engaging residents about what’s happening in their communities.
During AHOD Phase I (April 24-26), Phase II (June 5-7), Phase III (June 26-28) and Phase IV (July 10-12), MPD made a total of (1,897) arrests and seized thousands of dollars in drugs.
The MPD is reminding residents that it offers a reward of up to $25,000 to anyone who provides information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for any unsolved homicide committed in the District of Columbia.
The MPD offers a reward of up to $10,000 to anyone who provides information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person(s) responsible for any armed robbery or a robbery that results in serious bodily injury.

PRACTICE BURGLARY PREVENTION
SUMMER IS A GOOD TIME TO PRACTICE BURGLARY PREVENTION
With many of us enjoying outdoor activities this summer, the chances of getting
careless — and giving burglars an opportunity to strike — are, unfortunately, increased.
With the warm weather, both homeowners and apartment dwellers may be tempted to
leave their doors unlocked or their windows open. Common excuses are that they are
going outside for “only a few minutes” or they will “only be in the backyard.” But it only takes a few minutes for a burglar to enter a home through an unlocked door or an open window. Throughout the year, but especially during the summer, residents are reminded to have good locks installed on their doors — and to use them all the time, especially when they leave their homes. Ground-floor windows should be closed and locked when residents leave their homes, and window locks are recommended on all windows at all times.
In addition, homeowners should keep ladders secured — preferably in a locked garage — at all times. Some burglars have been known to use a resident’s ladder to enter
a second-story window. Most of all, residents are encouraged to look out for one another and call the police if they see anything suspicious.

D.C. APPROPRIATE SAFETY GEAR AND REGISTERING YOUR BIKE
PREPARE FOR YOUR SUMMER BICYCLE RIDES BY GETTING THE
APPROPRIATE SAFETY GEAR AND REGISTERING YOUR BIKE
According to the National Safe Kids Campaign, motor vehicle collisions account for nearly 90 percent of all bicycle-related deaths. A collision with a motor vehicle increases the risk of death, severity of injury, and probability of head injury. Help protect your child against such accidents by making sure that he/she wears a helmet at all times while cycling. The District of Columbia has bicycle helmet laws to protect cyclists under the age of 16 who enjoy the many streets and trails in and around the Nation’s Capital. Helmet laws are enforced for minors and encouraged for all adult cyclists, so please make sure you and your child wear a helmet at all
times when riding a bike.
In addition to mandating that riders under age 16 wear a helmet
while riding a bicycle, the law also requires that children under the age of 16 wear a helmet when riding a scooter, skateboard, sled, coaster, toy vehicle, or any similar device.
While bike registration has been the responsibility of the MPD in the past, bicycle
registration laws changed in the District of Columbia on June 1, 2008. Bicycle registration is no longer required in the District of Columbia. However, the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) and the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) strongly encourage residents to register their bicycles with the National Bicycle Registry (NBR). NBR is a service that allows you to register your bicycle in a national database by serial number. If your bike is ever stolen, it can be identified and you can prove ownership. Law enforcement anywhere
can access this database. NBR also guarantees your registration. If your bike is stolen and not recovered by police within 6 months, NBR will register your next bike for free and the stolen bike information will remain in the database until the bike is recovered no matter how long
it takes.
